Senate President Godswill Akpabio has recommended the opposition to come together before the 2027 election.
He cautioned that if the opposition continued to criticize President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), they would be unable to unite.
Akpabio spoke during the inauguration of the newly built Left-Hand Service Carriageway in Abuja, the country’s capital.
Some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, including former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu and Ayo Fayose of Ekiti, attended the ceremony.
During his Democracy Day presentation to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Senate president referred to Tinubu’s statement.
Akpabio stated, “Like the president, I do not want a one-party state in Nigeria. He prays that the opposition would clean up their act.

“Try to put your houses together before the next election so that no one can accuse you of attempting to suppress the opposition.
“But if you expect me to chair over your problems and put them together as a president’s representative and Senate president, I will not.
“That is why the president stated he wants you to come together, but if you can’t, he would not assist you come together. This is all about politics.
“And you will never come together if you continue to lie on a regular basis. And you criticise everything. Nothing is good in your country. Nigeria looked similar in 1960. Was Abuja like this three years ago?
