Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress’ (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate, has stated that if President Bola Tinubu had received a National Award, he would have filed a lawsuit against him.
According to Naija News, the president announced the official list of 102 recipients of the 2025 Democracy Day National Honors on Thursday. These individuals include both deceased and current Nigerians who have made contributions to the nation’s democratic evolution.
However, some Nigerians were upset that Sowore and Dele Momodu, the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were left off the list of recipients.
The politician-turned-activist stated that he would have turned down the prize in a statement on his official Facebook page on Friday.
Sowore declared that he will sue Tinubu for slander in addition to rejecting the award.

He wrote, “I would not only reject and denounce the award but also take definitive legal action for defamation if I were mistakenly included by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his “National honour” list.”
In other news, Sowore has called the present coalition negotiations “false,” saying they lack intellectual depth and direction.
According to reports, Sowore’s remarks coincide with a rising political realignment as different players set themselves up for the upcoming presidential election.
The opposition has been led by Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, and Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2023 presidential contender.
But in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sowore cautioned Nigerians that the current coalition efforts are ideologically and strategically lacking, and will only serve to bolster rather than undermine President Bola Tinubu’s reelection campaign.
