President John Mahama has announced his desire to make British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua a Ghanaian citizen.
The Ghanaian president also designated Anthony Joshua as boxing’s continental ambassador, demonstrating cultural solidarity and sporting diplomacy.
Joshua received the offer during his courtesy visit to the Jubilee House in Accra.

Joshua was met by President Mahama, Ghanaian boxing icon Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and other dignitaries.

President Mahama, clearly enthralled by Joshua’s presence and international prominence, commended the former unified world heavyweight champion for his global accomplishments and cultural effect.
“If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will,” Mahama said, to acclaim from the audience. “He will serve as our ambassador. We need people like him to help alter the lives of today’s youth. “We hope he will be an ambassador for boxing in Africa and champion this cause.”
The president mentioned that Joshua’s participation might encourage a new generation of African fighters. “After him, a new generation of boxers will make Africa proud and impact their respective societies.” You are a well-loved icon in Ghana,” Mahama added.
Joshua’s tour to Ghana began on Friday, June 13, and has included outreach activities, training sessions, and media appearances.

However, his tour rekindled debate about Nigeria’s long-standing cultural rivalry with Ghana.

Joshua acknowledged in a candid moment at Jubilee House that Ghana was not originally on his tour itinerary, due in part to prejudiced narratives he had experienced in Nigeria.

“Coming to Ghana wasn’t on my agenda,” Joshua admitted. “Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria prioritizes Nigeria over Ghana. But now I’m here, and I’m looking around like they lied to me.”

His amusing statement elicited laughs and applause, highlighting the lighthearted but traditional rivalry between the two West African countries.

Joshua went on to convey his tremendous appreciation for Ghana’s infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural richness.

“I’m impressed with your beautiful country, amazing culture, hospitality, the airport, the organisation, and I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone across the world how beautiful this place is,” added the visitor.
