Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, has rebuffed recent calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to select him as his running mate in the 2027 general elections, calling the agitation premature and needless.
Senator Barau, in a statement published on Tuesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, urged the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA) and other groups demanding a halt to their activities. He asked them instead to help President Tinubu’s administration in carrying out the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“My attention has been directed to several posts on social media and in some national publications by groups, including the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA), encouraging our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to nominate me as his running partner in 2027. “This is out of place at the moment and not in our best interests,” he said.
Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, stated that the current administration’s success should be the top priority for all Nigerians. “If you are truly my supporters, please desist from this unnecessary clamour and join the train to restore the glorious days of our country under the able leadership of President Tinubu,” urged him.
The senator restated his dedication to the president’s agenda and urged citizens to support the government’s measures, many of which he claims are already producing results. “President Tinubu is really committed to improving our country’s fortunes. Let us assist him in carrying out his initiatives for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he continued.
The announcement came amid heated political debate over the 2027 elections, particularly around Vice President Kashim Shettima’s future on the ticket.
