In anticipation of the general elections in 2027, Gabriel Suswam, a senior PDP official and former governor of Benue State, has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be wary of the burgeoning opposition coalition.
Suswam said the alliance is a powerful political force that is growing stronger as a result of the general discontent with the economic policies of the current administration in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today.
This political realignment is not the first time we have seen it. Nigerians’ suffering under this government is fostering unity amongst opposing factions. Since everyone is impacted, the coalition will be a powerful force in 2027, according to Suswam.
He emphasized how “very worried” he would be if he were a member of the ruling APC.
When President Bola Tinubu recently visited Nasarawa State, he criticized the opposition alliance, calling its members “internally displaced politicians.” This was interpreted as a jab at disgruntled members of the APC and other parties as well as defectors.
In response, Suswam advised against making the same error the PDP made in 2015 when they underestimated the APC, which was then in formation and ultimately destroyed them in the election.
“We committed the same mistake during the formation of APC. They won the election, but we didn’t pay attention to them,” Suswam remembered.
He went on to say that the ruling party needs to take note of internal dissatisfaction, exposing that some APC members are covertly siding with the new coalition in expectation of a change in power.
