Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, has warned that it is too early to discuss his next steps if the coalition fails to designate him as its flagbearer.
According to reports, Obi made this statement as speculation over the structure and leadership of the projected opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections increased.
Obi made the comment during a virtual interaction organized by ParallelFact on 𝕏 (previously Twitter) on Sunday. He answered questions from fans and political analysts.

In response to a query on what he would do if the opposition coalition, which includes Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, did not select him as its presidential candidate, Obi stated that the coalition has yet to adopt a party.

He emphasized that conversations were still underway and reminded his supporters that he was dedicated to inclusive politics.

The former governor of Anambra State stated, “From day one, I have always attended every coalition meeting unless I was travelling. I always discuss issues with them. I can’t assure you that the coalition will produce Peter Obi. When we get to that point, we discuss it.

“But the coalition represents us working together to defend the country. We have not reached the point where we can declare it will be this person. I feel that those who are banding together are nice people who wish to work for the good of the [nation]. That is my belief.

“And if that is the case, I believe we will all have to make sacrifices for our country. That is how I see it. At that point, we shall ensure that the best of us emerges as [candidate].

“The coalition wishes to adopt a party. And we’ll do it shortly. Other parties will still participate. Other parties have not joined because there are problems inside their respective parties.

“I wish I could answer your question, but I can’t right now. I know I told you that the coalition isn’t talking about who will do this or that. I will do what is best for the country and what the people I lead and follow want. I do not discuss such topics on my own.

“Only a few times have leaders acted alone and without consultation. It isn’t yet time. Now we just want to get together. When that moment comes, you’ll know, and I’ll consult. I will then explain what I am going to do. I’ve never done anything without consulting someone. If you were one of my close friends, you would know that I sought advice before leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). I didn’t just wake up in the morning and decide to do this. And if I were elected President, I would not make unilateral decisions.”
