Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former vice-presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has warned that the opposition coalition may be unintentionally aiding President Bola Tinubu’s electoral agenda by entering into coalitions with unclear structures and commitments.
In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Baba-Ahmed contrasted the present coalition’s efforts, particularly its adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections, to the 2014 merger that created the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He underlined that, while he has had contacts with coalition figures, he has not quit the Labour Party, preferring to closely monitor developments. He describes his approach as “cautious and strategic,” and he monitors the coalition’s “body language” before making any decisions.
“Let me just state that the opposition is correct in all they are doing. I totally agree with coming together. The principles and objectives are all correct. However, you’re also playing someone else’s game.” This is Tinubu’s game.

Datti cautioned against underestimating the Labour Party, citing its considerable significance in the 2023 elections.
“The Labour Party deserves better than to be walked away. Despite our reservations, we know whose hands are playing in each and every gathering. This is a party that received, by our estimation, more than ten million votes. This is a party that defeated both the APC and the PDP, regardless of what the law courts declared.”
He also emphasized the need of internal democracy inside the coalition, claiming that the quality of primary elections will be a true barometer of the alliance’s credibility and preparation for governing.
“The beginning of good governance is if you run good primaries,” he explained.
