The violent battle between supporters of Aminu Ado Bayero, the ousted 15th Emir of Kano, and Muhammadu Sanusi II, the reinstated 16th Emir, in the Kofar-Kudu neighborhood of Kano city has prompted the Kano State Police Command to form a panel to look into the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, had ordered a full-scale inquiry into the altercation, according to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s public relations officer, who confirmed the situation to Punch on Monday.
“A panel has been established by the CP, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, to look into the altercation,” Haruna wrote in a WhatsApp message to Punch.
Emir Bayero’s convoy apparently tried to cross the Kofar-Kudu axis on Sunday while traveling from his Mandawari home to the Nassarawa mini-palace, however specifics are still unclear.
Witnesses who talked to the platform said that Bayero’s group ran with strong opposition from alleged Emir Sanusi followers, which led to property destruction and injuries to palace guards.

Hoodlums allegedly damaged the front gate of the Gidan Rumfa Palace, injured palace guards, and destroyed police cars, according to a local who saw the altercation.
The witness stated, “The police’s timely and prompt response prevented the incident from degenerating into a full-blown bloody clash,” adding that cops quickly used tear gas to disperse the opposing factions.
The fight is the most recent in a long-running struggle for royal authority that began in May 2024 when the Kano State Government decided to remove Emir Bayero and install Emir Sanusi II.
Since then, the emirate has been plagued by political tensions and judicial disputes, and the two monarchs have been functioning from different palaces, Sanusi at the main palace in Gidan Rumfa and Bayero at the Nassarawa mini-palace.
