The establishment of Apa state from Benue will alleviate the region’s “historic marginalization,” according to House of Representatives member Philip Agbese.
Agbese, who represents Benue’s Ado/Ogbadigbo/Okpokwu federal constituency, also urged for the creation of new LGAs in the state while speaking to reporters on the margins of the House of Representatives’ open week in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to him, the action will increase economic opportunities, improve service delivery, bring governance closer to the people, and fortify accountability and transparency at the local level.
A number of ideas, including the establishment of states, have been submitted to the national assembly, which is presently revising the 1999 constitution.
“We can close the gap between our people and governance by establishing new local governments and Apa state, guaranteeing that they get the resources and attention they are entitled to,” Agbese stated.
“Government is more successful when local administrations are located closer to the populace. More responsive governance would result from the public having greater access to their leaders.
“Our region’s growth and development would be accelerated by Apa State.” With the establishment of Apa State, we may realize our full potential because we had both natural and people resources.

In terms of infrastructure development and resource allocation, our region has always been marginalized.
“Apa state would give us a platform for faster development, enabling us to use the resources and autonomy that come with statehood to address our particular opportunities and challenges.”
Although establishing a state has its difficulties, Agbese claimed that it is possible if there is a strong political desire.
He declared, “We are not ignorant of the difficulties involved in establishing new states and local governments.”
However, I think we can overcome these obstacles and create a better future for our area if we are determined, diligent, and have the support of the people.
“Let’s take advantage of this constitutional review opportunity to reshape our future and make sure our constituency receives the resources and attention it is due.”
Agbese called on all parties involved—including traditional institutions and community leaders—to back the establishment of Apa state from Benue state.
