In order to look into the death of former governor Rotimi Akeredolu, the Ondo State Government established a coroner’s inquest, which the Sunshine League of Professionals has stated it supports.

In a statement released by the group’s leader, Dr. Bayo Akinrimisi, in response to the editorial in “The Nation” titled “Let Akeredolu Rest in Peace,” the group claimed that the government was acting in the public interest.

It is unfortunate, the group stated, that some people have made false accusations that the state government has a personal agenda against people who were close to the late governor.

It read: “We would like to reply to the editorial that was published by The Nation with the same title.

“We find it concerning and disheartening that a serious issue like the death of a sitting governor has been politicized and misrepresented in public discourse, even while we recognize every citizen’s freedom to express their ideas.

The Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State recently issued a statement addressing multiple petitions for a coroner’s inquest into the death of former Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON. This was merely an administrative and constitutional response to public concern.

It’s unfortunate that some people have made untrue claims that the current governor or attorney general has a personal grudge against people who were close to the previous governor.

As Ondo State residents, we are dedicated to making sure that our government operates in a responsible manner.

“The Ondo State Government, led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, must make sure that transparency and the rule of law are upheld. We respect the memory of the late Arakunrin Akeredolu and uphold his legacy in both our words and deeds.

But a government chosen by the people cannot ignore legitimate requests from its constituents. It is both legally required and the responsibility of any responsible government to acknowledge and consider such demands.

Therefore, reducing our legitimate concerns to a simple political disagreement or personal grudge is unjust and deceptive.

“Calls for a coroner’s inquest are in the public interest and should be given the consideration and fairness they merit.

“We expect a coroner’s inquest to be conducted legally, openly, and with respect if the state government deems the request reasonable.”

If the state government does not comply with the public’s request, the group says it will take the matter to court.

“A procedure that is completely legal and civil doesn’t require any one person, organization, or media source to cause needless fear or public worry.

“Ondo State’s citizens deserve responsible, factual, and adult discourse, particularly in light of the death of a leader. Instead than diverting attention with political issues, our government need to prioritize unity, progress, and healing.

“We might be forced to take legal action to force the Ondo State Government to respond appropriately if the current government ignores this demand.

“Let me be clear: there is no reason to fear the truth, and the pursuit of clarity and truth will remain free from political influence.”
