The University of Ibadan Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given 11 underprivileged students scholarships totaling 1.1 million naira to help them with their studies, stay motivated, and enhance their academic achievement.

Out of the more than 100 students that submitted for the scholarship, the selection committee identified eleven as the most qualified candidates for the 2024–2025 ASUU impoverished students scholarship award following a thorough screening and interview process.

The National ASUU presented two students with a total of ₦200,000.

Five students received ₦100,000 apiece from the ASUU-UI University of Ìbàdàn Branch.

Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí, a branch member, gave ₦50,000 to four students, the Union, each to assist the project.

Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, the chairman of the ASUU at the University of Ibadan, spoke about the award and said that the union felt that the future of bright Nigerian youths shouldn’t be cut short because they couldn’t pay for their education, even though they were facing many difficulties, including delayed salary payments and the federal government’s tardiness in signing a new agreement with the union.

As stated by Dr. Afolabi, “ASUU views investing in the future of underprivileged students as a way of instilling in the beneficiaries the values of support and empathy so that they will give back to society in the following years.”

Professor Abiodun Olaniran, the Zonal Coordinator for Ibadan, presented some of the awards on behalf of ASUU LAUTECH Chairman Olujimi Dada. “The Union is selfless and not selfish in the pursuit of her members welfare alone,” Dada said.

ASUU members should not get weary of pressing the government to take the necessary action to enhance their well-being and the educational environment at all public universities, he suggested.
