Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away after weeks of medical treatment in a London hospital.
A statement released by his longtime media aide, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news on Sunday.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Shehu posted on social media.
The 81-year-old former leader had reportedly been battling health complications in recent weeks, although the specific illness remains undisclosed.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, following a previous stint as military head of state in the 1980s. His tenure was marked by efforts to fight corruption, tackle insecurity, and reform the economy — policies that drew both praise and criticism across various sectors.
News of his death has sparked an outpouring of condolences from across Nigeria and the international community. Tributes continue to pour in as the nation mourns a man who remained a central figure in Nigerian politics for over four decades.
Funeral arrangements and further official announcements from the family and government are expected in the coming days.
