Former Nigerian Minister of State for Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba claims that former President Muhammadu Buhari kept the gasoline subsidy in order to prevent deaths among Nigerians.
In an interview on Monday with Arise TV, Nwajiuba said that the former president had made important contributions to Nigeria’s progress and that statistics from his eight years in office bear out his work.
The data are all clear from all known publications over the past eight years. Two recessions have been recovered from by this economy. This economy was affected by COVID. The former minister claimed that he performed exceptionally well in this economy.
At the time of his departure, we had the dollar at less than N500, according to the exchange rate. To prevent Nigerians from dying, he held subsidies.
“The death toll in the past two years alone has surpassed the number of voters.” Just from people dying as a result of tankers collapsing and burning people, people searching for food and Christmas presents, and so forth.
“He understood why he wanted to stand up for Nigerians before others, and he gave the BBC an interview on the subject.”
Nwajiuba also cited information from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), which showed that 183 businesses had closed in the previous two years. He claims that this is in contrast to the relative stability that existed under Buhari.

Buhari’s administration made strides in important areas like mining, non-oil exports, and oil production, according to the former minister.
He stated, “The numbers show that he did this work.”
“Everything we have done in government, mining, non-oil exports, oil exports, and the concept of condensates is explained.”
But despite Buhari’s limitations as a human being and his lack of comprehensive knowledge, Nwajiuba recognized that his government was a great success.
At the age of 82, Buhari passed away in a London, UK, clinic on July 13, 2025.
Buhari was first elected president in 2015 after serving as military ruler of state from 1983 to 1985. He was re-elected in 2019.
