After being in the hands of Boko Haram for four years, the Borno state police command reports that it has reunited two boys who managed to escape with their families.

Ayuba Ishaku and Yakubu Haruna, two youngsters who are around 13 years old, came to the divisional police headquarters in Maiduguri on July 12th, according to a statement released by the state’s police spokesperson, Nahum Daso, on Tuesday.

Daso claimed that the children were kidnapped in 2019 during an attack on Mandaragrau village in Biu LGA, Borno state, along with other women and children.

According to him, they were transferred to the Baga neighborhood of Mangari and Tumbun Mota in Kukawa LGA, where they were detained.

The youngsters described being made to work as domestic helpers and being trained in guns maintenance, according to the police spokesperson.

According to him, they were able to make their getaway on the evening of July 8th, after months of preparation, by using the fact that many terrorists had gone on operations.

“On July 12, 2025, they finally arrived in Maiduguri after navigating through the bush to neighboring villages and communities,” the statement says.

On the commissioner of police’s order, Daso added, the boys were placed in protective custody at the ITE division and given care before attempts were made to find their relatives.

The father of one of the boys, Ishaku Gaji, verified that they were among the several people kidnapped on December 29, 2019, the police spokeswoman had stated.

The youngsters have been submitted to the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs for a thorough debriefing, he said, in accordance with the “Borno Model,” a state initiative that aids in the rehabilitation and reintegration of victims of terrorism.

Naziru Abdulmajid, the Borno police commissioner, praised the boys’ bravery and stated that the command is still dedicated to helping stakeholders address the state’s security issues and safeguarding its inhabitants.

“The command calls on the public to be on guard and to notify security agencies right away of any suspicious activity,” Daso stated.
