Prior to the August 16, 2025, National Assembly by-elections for the Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency, the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vetted and approved candidates for its July 21st, 2025 party primary.
For the Edo Central Senate ticket, Joe Okojie, Friday Itulah, and John Yakubu have been cleared.
The party only approved Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi as its candidate for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat after he underwent screening.
To run for the Edo Central Senatorial District ticket, Festus Edogun was not authorized by the party.
The PDP National Working Committee established a five-member panel to screen the candidates on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the state party secretariat, which is situated at No. 20 Aiguobasimwin Street, GRA, Benin City.
The chairperson of the committee is Professor Okumoko Tubo Pearce, and the secretary is Arc. Chinomso Odoemelan. Inemo Dede, Evelyn Promise, and David Omare are among the other members.
On Friday, July 18, 2025, in the Edo PDP Secretariat, board members gave the candidates their certificates of clearance.

After being cleared, Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi spoke on behalf of other candidates and praised committee members for their professionalism, hard work, and equity in carrying out their responsibilities.
“I want to sincerely thank members of the Screening Committee for their professionalism, fairness, and diligence in carrying out their duties,” he continued. This clearing puts us in a position to tackle the issue at hand. With our people’s unwavering support, we will win and guarantee that our residents receive high-caliber, meaningful representation. I am ready to fly the PDP flag in Ovia.
He reiterated, “I am sure I will prevail. We shall restore Ovia’s glory and make it even more brilliant with the help of my people. Our priorities will be grassroots development and making Ovia the envy of everyone.
