The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has held a public hearing on a bill that would alter the Agency’s Establishment Act until 2022. The measure was sponsored by Hon. Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, the former chair of the House Committee on Aviation Technology.

Among other important goals, the proposed revisions aim to give the Agency a precise and comprehensive framework for cost recovery across the economy, particularly in the non-aviation sectors.

Strengthening the Agency’s ability to carry out its mandate, encouraging efficiency, enhancing infrastructure, guaranteeing safety, and improving employee welfare are the goals.

Professor Charles Anosike, the Director-General/CEO, gave a presentation at the public hearing organized by the House Committee on Aviation Technology. He underlined that cost recovery is a widely recognized technique and a crucial component of the Agency’s sustainability.

The hearing was attended by other important stakeholders from a range of socioeconomic sectors, including trade unions, WMO, NIMASA, FAAN, NCC, and past Agency Director-Generals Professor Mansur Matazu, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, and Engr. Dr. Jide Adeniji.

Previous Agency directors also submitted verbally and in writing.

The National Assembly’s dedication to a people-oriented legislature that guarantees MDAs like NiMet have the ability to support public growth, uphold transparency, respond to national needs, address climate change and hazardous weather, and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable communities was reaffirmed by the Speaker of the House, who opened the hearing through the Deputy Chief Whip.

He emphasized how crucial NiMet’s mission is to protecting people’s lives on land, in the air, and on the sea—an endeavor that calls for everyone’s cooperation.
