Peter Obi, a former candidate for presidency of the Labour Party (LP), has disclosed why he chose to give the University of Calabar School of Dentistry ₦20 million.
He clarified that he gave the money in order to lessen the financial strain on pupils.
As political officials lived in luxury, Obi bemoaned the government’s disregard for what he called the most fundamental educational demands of kids.
The former Anambra State governor stated, “The situation at UNICAL is a direct reflection of failed leadership,” while speaking at the Calabar Airport. We must stop letting our kids suffer the most as a result of our political missteps.

“We spend millions on the luxuries of political office holders, but young Nigerians who are trying to further their education are not equipped with the most basic resources.” This shouldn’t be the case.
Obi said the circumstances at the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry were a clear example of a leadership breakdown in Nigeria’s educational system. He stated that the ₦20 million donation was intended to help enhance the faculty’s vital infrastructure.
According to him, “this token will assist in the purchase of 15 more dental chairs, which is a crucial requirement set by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for expanding the faculty’s student intake.”
He begged the authorities to take into account the predicament of the impacted students, whose academic progress had been seriously hindered by subpar facilities.
Insisting that the future of the nation rests on the level of education and empowerment of its people, Obi urged other well-meaning Nigerians and leaders to back organizations like UNICAL.
