NEMA reports that local divers quickly arrived on the scene and saved eight of the passengers alive. The other nine passengers, regrettably, were pronounced deceased.
Together with members of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), and local government, the agency has subsequently carried out a thorough review of the disaster.
Following the event, NEMA and its partners conducted a community sensitization program to emphasize the value of safety precautions when traveling by water, particularly the use of life jackets.
According to NEMA, “NIWA also provided life jackets to the community as part of the response efforts.”
The organization emphasized the importance of rigorously adhering to water travel regulations, particularly in rural areas where canoe dependence is still prevalent.
