The Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and other opposition coalition members have suggested a one-term government, but Nigerian journalist Reuben Abati has said this will not work.
Abati reportedly mentioned this during his remarks on Monday, August 4, 2025, during the morning broadcast on Arise TV.
The media celebrity said that politicians that promise a single term are desperate because it will not work.

The former presidential assistant stated that he does not think the Northerners, who are already upset about a Yoruba president, will accept the idea of an Igbo president because Nigeria’s civil war is still ongoing.
It is a sign of desperation, he remarked, for any politician to approach you and say, “I am going to serve only one term.” It won’t succeed. Similar to this, it is also a show of desperation when people serve food, carry plates, and act like boys at parties that event planners might have planned better. It does not function. That will never succeed.
“The second issue is that you stated that the North will support this one-term proposal. But no! The North won’t as this nation’s civil conflict has never been resolved. I don’t think Northerners who are already upset about a Yoruba president will simply change their minds and accept the prospect of an Igbo president. This nation contains inconsistencies that have not yet been resolved.
