The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has apprehended a man,Njimogu Ikedi, who attempted to smuggle substances suspected to be psychoactive drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja.

The incident occurred at the weekend, about 12:45pm, when Ikedi came in the guise of a visitor to one of the inmates, and during the routine search by personnel on duty, items suspected to be cannabis sativa as well as other psychoactive substances were concealed in his short boxers worn like a diaper.

Upon discovery, the Controller of Corrections in charge of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Christopher Peter Jen, ordered that the suspect be apprehended and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

In a statement, Jen called on visitors with ulterior motives to desist from such acts as their machinations would be uncovered by his eagle-eyed personnel.

He further called on the general public and well-meaning Nigerians to support NCoS in its efforts towards reforming and rehabilitating offenders so as to foster public safety.

The Federal Government dismissed 15 NCoS officers recently, an action that put every officer on his or her toes.

While 59 others had their ranks reduced as a result of confirmed breaches of professional standards, 42 personnel were issued written warning letters as a corrective measure for serious misconduct and violation of service regulations.

“Having deliberated on the offences of over 231 cases of the personnel, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) also exonerated 16 personnel, who were found not guilty of the allegations made against them. Seven officers are currently on suspension to ascertain the levels of their involvement in a case under investigation” the statement, noted.
