Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Ebute-Meta has ordered the remand of a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamusideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shamelon in prison , over the alleged murder of a dispatch rider.
Oladiti, 55, who was charged before the court on a three-count charge bordering on murder, conspiracy, and grievous harm, was remanded by Magistrate, Mrs. C M Akinde, in custody, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Oladiti, who had been in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, was brought to Court 2 , Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court , yesterday ,September 30, 2025, under tight security.
According to the charge sheet, Oladiti allegedly assaulted Imam Ramon on August 27, 2025, at Lewis Street, Lagos Island, by delivering multiple fist blows that caused grievous harm. Ramon was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, where he later died
In another incident on September 17, 2025, Oladiti and others still at large were accused of conspiring to commit felony and grievous harm. On that same day, he allegedly attacked another victim, Omale Samuel, a dispatch rider, inflicting severe injuries that led to his death.
The police prosecutor, SP Anthony Iyeye , told the court that the offences contravened Sections 223, 245, and 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015, which stipulate punishment for unlawful assault, conspiracy, and culpable homicide.
The prosecution alleged that Oladiti, alongside others at large, unlawfully beat two men, Imam Ramon and Omale Samuel, with fist blows, causing serious injuries.
Ramon was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina, where he later died.
The defendant, plea was not taken but the court ordered for his remand pending the release of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Investigating Police Officer (IPO), ASP Johnson Olumuyiwa, confirmed that the case file would be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP within 30 days for legal advice.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for October 28.
However, angry protesters attempted to lynched the accused but for the quick intervention of Lagos state Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh who sent combined teams of Tactical Units and other units .
The placard carrying protesters with inscriptions: ” Justice for Ramon”, ” we demand for accelerated prosecution”, Give us justice “, were angry that the accused was rescued. It took the courageous officers time to take take the accused away from the court premises.
Family members and community representatives of both deceased men, were present in court and visibly distraught, calling for justice over the deaths.
Count One of the charge preferred against the defendant read:”That you Shamusideen Oladiti ‘m’, on the 27th August 2025 at about 1000hrs at Lewis Street, Lagos Island in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did unlawfully beat Imam Ramon ‘m’, with fist blows all over his body, which caused him harm and was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, Marina Lagos where he later died and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015”.
