At least, one person has been confirmed dead while six others sustained injuries in an early morning road accident that occured around the Majidun–Ogolonto axis of Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LATSMA),said the accident occurred opposite the MRS Filling Station that involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number: EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck.
LASTMA spokesman , Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary findings showed that the commercial bus, which was chartered to convey passengers to a programme in Ogijo, suffered brake failure while the driver was speeding.
He said the driver lost control and crashed into the tipper parked by the roadside to buy diesel, resulting in the death of an adult female passenger, while five female passengers and one male were injured.
Taofiq said the injured victims were taken to Benic Special Hospital, while the deceased was evacuated by security personnel to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for documentation.
He added that LASTMA officers arrested both drivers after the tipper driver attempted to flee the scene. The two men have been handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for further investigation.
According to him, LASTMA officials also cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow to the Ikorodu Garage area.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. He wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
Bakare-Oki cautioned motorists against speeding, noting that excessive speed reduces a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical faults or emergencies.
He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring safety and promoting responsible driving across Lagos.
For emergencies, LASTMA urged road users to call its toll-free line: 080000527862.
