The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is taking steps to enhance inter-agency cooperation in combating drug abuse and promoting youth development. This was the outcome of a meeting between the NDLEA Edo State Commander, Dr Mitchell Ofoyeju, and a delegation of high-ranking officials to his office at the weekend by Akintayo Saidi, the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Honourable Charity Amanyaevbo, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Affairs, Edo State.

The objectives of the visitations are to foster collaboration among agencies responsible for drug law enforcement and youth welfare, addressing the pressing issues of substance abuse and youth empowerment in the state. It provided a platform for these leaders to discuss strategies, share insights, and lay out plans for joint initiatives aimed at curbing drug trafficking and usage among the young people.

Commander Mitchell, who decorated both guests as War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) partners, emphasised the importance of a unified approach in tackling drug-related challenges. “The fight against drug abuse is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment and collaboration of all agencies involved. When we work together, we can implement more effective solutions and outreach programmes to protect our youth. In addition, the agency is committed to a coordinated response in handling drug-related challenges in Edo State,” he stated.

During the discussions, Akintayo Saidi acknowledged the urgent need for preventive measures and community engagement to create awareness regarding the dangers of drug use. “As security agencies, it is important for us to work together through intelligence sharing and joint operations in addressing the problem of insecurity in the state,” Saidi noted.

The Commissioner for Youth Affairs echoed these sentiments, highlighting the critical efforts of Governor Monday Okpebholo in youth empowerment. He proposed the development of specialised programmes and workshops that would both educate young people about the risks associated with drug use and provide alternative recreational and vocational opportunities.

In his words, “Youth empowerment is one of the key programmes of Governor Monday Okpebholo. Our youth are our future leaders. We must equip them with the knowledge and resources necessary for them to make informed choices and also to meaningfully engage in productive ventures.”

All parties expressed willingness to work collaboratively in organising educational campaigns and support services for individuals affected by drug use. The visits reinforce the shared resolve among relevant institutions to fight against drug abuse and support youth development. As these agencies move forward, the focus will remain on creating lasting change that fosters a healthier and more empowered generation.
