The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) commander in Edo State, Mitchell Ofoyeju, has explained how officers repelled armed attacks during a cannabis plantation destruction operation. Commander Mitchell, while explaining the incident to journalists in Benin, reiterated the unwavering commitment to the fight against illicit drug cartels and that the command will not be intimidated by hostilities.
“I want to commend the courage and commitment of our officers. This attack, rather than deterring us, only strengthens our resolve to combat those who seek to undermine the health and safety of our communities. The NDLEA will not be intimidated by threats or violence. We will continue to take the fight to the enemies of our state, dismantling their operations and safeguarding the well-being of our citizens,” the commander stressed.
According to Mitchell, “I am glad to inform you that on July 8, 2025, our dedicated operatives successfully destroyed 28,000 kilograms of skunk, a potent local strain of cannabis, on three large plantations spanning over 11 hectares within the Ewere Uzebba forest in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State. During this operation, we uncovered 82 kilograms of processed cannabis inside a hut within the illicit drug farm. Such significant seizures reflect the NDLEA’s relentless pursuit of drug traffickers and the eradication of the growing threat posed by illegal cannabis syndicates.”
“The operation was successful but as our operatives were exiting the forest, they came under heavy gunfire from armed members of the cannabis cultivating syndicates seeking revenge. The situation was swiftly brought under control with the superior gun power of my officers. Their bravery exemplified extraordinary resilience and tactical skill in repelling the attack, ensuring their safe return without physical harm. Unfortunately, one of our operational vehicles sustained damage, being riddled with bullets, but our resolve remains unshaken,” Mitchell added.
Members of the public were also urged to stand with the NDLEA in the battle against drug trafficking. The command will relentlessly pursue those who engage in the cultivation and distribution of illegal narcotics. “We call upon all residents of Edo State to remain vigilant and continue to support our efforts.”
