Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, has called on all Nigerians and Edo people to reflect on the lessons learned from June 12 and to recommit to the principles of justice, democracy, and togetherness.
June 12 serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by committed Nigerians who fought for true democracy, Governor Okpebholo emphasized.
He urged people to defend their hard-won liberties and democratic accomplishments.
In a statement signed and released on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo said, “As we observe June 12, our Democracy Day, we are reminded of the unwavering determination of Nigerians who, on that pivotal day in 1993, unitedly expressed their support for the will of the people.”

Chief M.K.O. Abiola and everyone who contributed to the fight for the democracy we now value are remembered on this day, the governor said.
By pointing out that the “SHINE” program is designed to provide noticeable benefits in the lives of Edo people in every area, including security, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and education, Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance.
“Democratic ideals and the conviction that government must be responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people are the foundation of our administration.
“We’re working nonstop to make sure that democracy’s benefits are shared widely, creating a peaceful, forward-thinking, and prosperous environment for everybody,” Governor Okpebholo declared.
Additionally, he urged Edo residents to continue actively participating in the democratic process in order to hold elected officials responsible and to positively impact the growth of the state.
“Active public participation is essential to democracy. I beg you all to be on guard, take an active part in civic duties, and work together to fortify our democratic institutions,” the governor continued.
Governor Okpebholo prays for more peace, unity, and advancement in the state and the country and wishes all Edo residents and Nigerians a calm and thoughtful Democracy Day.
