Two men in Kano State have been found guilty by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of impersonating its officials.
According to reports, on Friday, after being arraigned on a single count of impersonation, the prisoners, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Usman, were sentenced by Kano State High Court Justice Nasiru Saminu.
In May 2025, the two posed as EFCC inspectors and used fake identification cards to trick unwary citizens, according to the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Directorate.

A portion of the charge stated: “That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 in Kano, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, falsely impersonated as investigators of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where you used a false identity card and paraded yourselves as staff of EFCC, thereby committing an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”
When the charge was read to the defendants in court, they both entered guilty pleas.
Presenting the case’s facts, Idris I. Haruna, the prosecuting attorney, urged the court to rule in favor of their plea.
After that, Justice Saminu found them guilty and gave them each a six-month jail sentence, with the possibility of a ₦50,000 fine.
According to the anti-graft agency, the individuals were detained while pretending to be its agents. The EFCC cautioned the public about scammers posing as commission representatives.
The conviction strengthens the EFCC’s continued efforts to combat impersonators who damage the agency’s reputation and take advantage of people through deceptive means.
