In the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, leaders of the Yelewata community have urged the state government to build 100 two-bedroom apartments immediately in order to relocate people that were displaced by the June 13, 2025, massacre.
As noted, armed herdsmen allegedly broke into the community during the attack, burning down houses, market stalls, and other buildings while killing over 200 people, including women and children.
Matthew Mnyan, the community leader and spokesperson, told reporters in Yelewata on Thursday that the condition for survivors is intolerable. He was accompanied by women, youth leaders, and elders.
Our suffering has been excessive. Over 200 of our guys were killed in a single day. Our market was devastated, families were dispersed, and our homes were set on fire. Our community has to be rebuilt, and we need to return our people home,” Mnyan stated.
Community leaders called on the state government to direct post-massacre funds into concrete rehabilitation projects.

Mnyan said, “We are pleading with the Benue State Government to utilize the donated funds to construct a minimum of 100 two-bedroom apartments to relocate displaced families.”
In order for our people to resume economic activity and begin a new life, we also need our market to be rebuilt.
In addition, the Yelewata leaders demanded the creation of a mobile police station to improve security and deter future attacks, as well as financial assistance for victims to launch companies.
“Our market’s reconstruction is essential,” Mnyan emphasized.
There would be no economic life in Yelewata without it. A mobile police station here would provide our people a sense of security, which is another necessity. By taking these actions, the remaining families will be able to reunite and return to their homes.
