Retired Nigerian Army Brigadier-General Simeon Apata’s father was slain, and Niniola, a well-known Nigerian musician, has stated that she would never fully recover from the horror she witnessed.
The assassination of Gen. Apata (rtd.) in Lagos on January 8, 1995, while his family was present, was recalled.

In a recent interview with Jay On Air, Niniola recapped the tragic event and noted that she finds it difficult to move on from it because she was her late father’s favorite kid.
“I was present in the house when my father was killed. You can imagine [the trauma] because I was his favorite offspring. I still can’t get over it. I’ll always be haunted by it,” she remarked.
“I was really young at the time.” I can’t recall my precise age at the time, but it wasn’t a pleasant one.
As a singer herself, Niniola’s sister Teni revealed in 2023 that she was traumatized by seeing her father’s murder when she was just two years old.
