A violent attack shattered the peace in Kpaduma 3, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Asokoro Extension, Abuja, late Monday night.
Armed assailants reportedly raided homes, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire with local vigilantes that lasted several hours.
Witnesses described the attacks as one of the most harrowing in recent memory, with the sound of gunshots and an explosion — suspected to be a grenade blast — alarming residents and commuters alike.
Several people sustained injuries, while two young women were sexually assaulted during the attack.
One vigilante, identified as Bako, was fatally shot defending the community. Residents indicated that the attackers came from a nearby village called Kobi and were believed to be kidnappers.
Frustration is growing over security concerns after residents revealed that they had repeatedly requested the landlord to improve safety measures months ago, but no action was taken.
Some of the residents questioned why certain homes appeared to be targeted.
Police arrived after the violence subsided, restoring a fragile calm. However, residents are calling for increased patrols, enhanced perimeter defenses, and faster police responses to prevent future attacks.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement or identify suspects.
