The Igbo Political Network (IPN) has invoked Amadioha, the traditional god of thunder, against those it alleged were responsible for the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The group also issued a seven-day ultimatum for his release.
Speaking to journalists in Enugu yesterday, the President of the group, Okemiri, said Kanu’s prolonged detention, despite existing court orders, “amounts to injustice and a calculated assault on the rights of the Igbo people.”
He accused some prominent Igbo politicians of collaborating with forces determined to keep Kanu in custody.
“The honest truth is that the time to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has come. It smacks of injustice and wickedness to continue to detain him even when competent courts have ordered his release. So, we are no longer begging for his release; he must be allowed to go,” Okemiri said.
He claimed that both nationally and internationally, the continued detention is widely viewed as a violation of Kanu’s fundamental human rights, and a signal that the Igbo are being treated as second-class citizens.
He questioned why notorious criminals, terrorists and drug offenders had recently been granted freedom whilst Kanu remained behind bars.
“This is why we, at the Igbo Political Network, have concluded without equivocation that his present ordeal is masterminded by selfish Igbo leaders and politicians. Yes, insinuations abound that they are external collaborators to continually hold Kanu behind bars. And to some extent, we agree to these allegations because it is the rat at home that tells the one in the bush that there is fish at home,” he said.
Okemiri referenced recent judicial decisions, including a Nairobi High Court ruling ,he said, declared Kanu’s 2021 transfer from Kenya to Nigeria unlawful and awarded damages. He also cited public figures, who had demanded Kanu’s freedom, quoting Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, as condemning the operation as a kidnap that violated international norms and deepened national distrust.
In what he called a “defining spiritual step,” Okemiri announced that the group had invoked Amadioha and given a seven-day ultimatum to those allegedly behind Kanu’s detention.
“And if between November 7 and November 13, 2025, Nnamdi Kanu is not set free, we have invoked Amadioha, the god of thunder, to strike all of them behind his continuous detention and ordeal dead,” he warned.
He added that further spiritual measures would be taken should the detention continues beyond the ultimatum.
