The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is partnering with the University of Benin (UNIBEN) to champion pre-employment alcohol and drug screening protocols.
This was made known yesterday, at the opening ceremony of a two-day training programme held at the University of Benin.
The event marks a proactive step towards institutionalising drug-free environments within professional and academic settings. The training, titled “Pre-Employment Alcohol and Drug Screening,” was organised by the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in collaboration with the Forensic Research and Development Centre, led by its director, Professor Eddy Ehikhame.
The ceremony witnessed key stakeholders in health, security, and academia. The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Professor Idia Eze-Iyamu, was present, underscoring the medical community’s commitment to the initiative.
Declaring the training open, the Special Guest of Honour and NDLEA Edo State Commander, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, emphasised the importance of the programme. He stated that pre-employment screening is a vital preventive strategy that safeguards institutional integrity, reduces workplace accidents, and enhances overall productivity.
“Today’s collaboration is not just about detection; it is about prevention, education, and building a healthier, more secure workforce for our state and our nation,” Dr. Ofoyeju said. “The NDLEA is committed to supporting institutions like UNIBEN and UBTH in implementing robust policies that deter drug abuse from the point of entry.”

Professor Ehikhame of the Forensic Research and Development Centre highlighted the technical aspects of the training, which is expected to equip human resources personnel, medical professionals, and security officers with the latest knowledge and ethical standards in conducting accurate and reliable substance tests.

The two-day training is expected to produce a cadre of professionals who are adept at implementing drug-free workplace policies in alignment with national guidelines.
