Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have uncovered and dismantled a suspected internet fraud training centre, popularly known as a “Yahoo Academy,” in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The raid, carried out on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Becki Estate in Karu, Abuja, led to the arrest of 31 suspects, including two alleged kingpins and several trainees.
According to the EFCC Spokesman, Dele Oyewale, the suspects were apprehended during an ongoing training session on cyber fraud.
Recovered items include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptops, and other electronic gadgets believed to have been used for fraudulent activities.
Oyewale added that preliminary investigations revealed that some of the recruits were reportedly lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate employment.
However, he said, upon arrival, they were allegedly confined within the facility and coerced into learning internet fraud schemes.
Oyewale further disclosed that the trainees were subjected to strict control measures, including restriction of movement and confiscation of personal mobile phones, effectively isolating them from the outside world.
Reports also indicated that corporal punishment and physical abuse were used to enforce compliance among the recruits.
The suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations, Oyewale added.
