Man, 27 nabbed for killing, robbing Okada rider

Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist during a violent struggle over his motorcycle in Igbesa.

The suspect, Chidi Ebere, was arrested by detectives attached to the Igbesa Division of the Command following the incident which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the suspect had boarded the motorcycle operated by the victim, Sunday Ogbu, 36, before launching a sudden attack in a bid to dispossess him of the motorcycle.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect boarded the victim’s motorcycle under false pretence and in the course of the trip, attacked him with the intention of snatching the motorcycle,” Babaseyi said.

He explained that the attack led to a struggle between the suspect and the victim, drawing the attention of passersby.

“A distress alarm raised by a witness attracted the swift response of our operatives, who immediately mobilised to the scene and apprehended the suspect,”

The PPRO disclosed that although the victim was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, but he was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

“Despite efforts to save his life, the victim unfortunately succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack,” she stated.

Babaseyi further confirmed that the police recovered critical exhibits from the scene, including the motorcycle and the weapon allegedly used in carrying out the attack.

“The knife used in the commission of the crime, as well as the victim’s motorcycle, have been recovered and secured as exhibits,”

He noted that the case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and prosecution.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and the case has been escalated to the SCID for discreet investigation and necessary legal action,” he said.

Condemning the incident, Commissioner of Police (CP) Bode Ojajuni, assured residents that justice would be served and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling violent crimes.

“The Command condemns this senseless and brutal act. We assure the public that justice will be pursued diligently and the perpetrator will face the full weight of the law,” the PPRO said.

The police also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.

“We urge residents to stay alert, report suspicious activities promptly, and partner with the police in our collective effort to rid society of criminal elements,” Babaseyi added.

Residents were further encouraged to make use of the Command’s emergency lines in reporting crimes and seeking assistance.
