New year eve accident: Police confirm death of two villagers in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed death of two persons in Obegu-aba, Ozibo, Ebonyi Local Government, Ebonyi State in an accident.

The incident occurred at about 7:30am on the New Year morning, along the Obegu-aba/Ogbaga road in the area.

The tragedy involved a Toyota Corolla car and a motorcycle.

The driver of the car fled the scene immediately the accident occurred.

Ebonyi state police public relations officer, SP Joshua Ukandu said,”at about 07:40am, the command received information about an accident at Obeagu village in Ebonyi LG, Ebonyi state, involving one metallic Corolla car, with registration number : 241 _ EBGH and a CY 80 Motorcycle red in colour, with registration number:AFK 579 QX ridden by Mgbebu Elijah, 19, who was conveying one Mbam Chidera, 19.

“Officers swiftly mobilised to the scene and took the victims to FETHA Abakaliki, where the Doctor on duty confirmed them dead.

“The Driver fled the scene, while concerted effort is in progress to trace and arrest the fleeing driver.”

New Year: Aiyedatiwa grants prerogative of mercy to 77 prisoners

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy to extend clemency to 77 convicts across correctional facilities in the state.

This was to commemorate the January 1, 2026 New Year celebration.

The state commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Olukayode Ajulo in a statement said the action underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s deep commitment to rehabilitative justice, second chances and the humane side of governance.

He said:”This reflects his belief that the justice system should balance accountability with compassion, particularly for those who have demonstrated genuine remorse and potential for reintegration into society.

Ajulo who chairs the Advisory Council stated that
“in commemoration of the January 1st, 2026 New Year Day celebration, the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended a total of 77 convicts for the mercy of Mr. Governor. In so doing, the council considered the nature of offence, length of time served, conduct and behavior in custody, age and health condition, rehabilitation and prospects of reintegration and reports from correctional and legal authorities.”

Dr. Ajulo praised the Governor’s decision, noting that “after due consideration, Mr. Governor has graciously approved the list of beneficiaries,” highlighting Aiyedatiwa’s thoughtful approach in personally reviewing each case to ensure fairness and humanity prevail.

The approved clemency measures, according to Ajulo include outright release for 12 convicts who have shown exemplary conduct and completed significant portions of their sentences, commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment or fixed terms for 22 condemned inmates.”

Plateau: 7 killed, many injured as Fulani militia attack Burn community in new Year mayhem

The people of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government, Plateau State, began the new year with sorrow as gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia attacked the community in new year’s eve killing seven people.

National Publicity Secretary Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the tragic incident in a statement, said that apart from the seven killed, many others are still missing

In the statement titled, ‘Another Killing Marred New Year Celebration In Plateau State, said that the latest attack adds to the growing list of violent assaults on innocent rural communities in Plateau State, further deepening concerns over the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace and celebration.

The statement said, “While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected armed Fulani militants/bandits.

“The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on December 31, 2025, barely minutes into the New Year, as peace-loving residents were preparing to bid farewell to 2025 and welcome 2026.

“As at the time of filing this report, seven corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, raising fears that the casualty figure may rise.

“According to local sources, the tragic incident came despite an earlier security alert warning that several communities in Jos South LGA had been earmarked for possible attacks. Sadly, Bum community has now fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence.

He said that the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) is closely monitoring developments and will provide further updates as the situation unfolds.
