National Police Council (NPC) has ratified the appointment of Olatunji Disu as acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The decision came during the third NPC meeting under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, presided over by the president himself. Disu, nominated by Tinubu last week after Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation.
The NPC, tasked with the organisation, administration, and operational oversight of the Nigeria Police Forc, including appointments and discipline of senior officers—endorsed the move swiftly. Governors from Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Enugu, and Plateau states attended, joined by the Ministers of Police Affairs, Federal Capital Territory, and Interior.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga told State House Correspondents that Disu will be sworn-in on Wednesday before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Also speaking reporters, the NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, revealed that the council thoroughly reviewed Disu’s records, office performance, and recommendations before giving its approval. “The Council was glad to approve the report and recommendations for him to be appointed the Inspector-General of Police,” he said.
AbdulRazaq outlined high expectations for Disu, particularly in navigating current national security challenges, including ongoing debates on state police. “He has his work cut out for him, especially in this age about talks on state police. The challenges are there; he’s been through it. He did a major assignment with… response in Lagos State and the FCT, so he has a record to show that he can perform,” the governor noted.
He stressed Disu’s responsibility to organize and deliver security across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), adding, “There are great expectations from the states, 36 states and the FCT which he has to organise.”
The NGF Chairman wished Disu success, pledging collaboration: “We wish him all the best and we look forward to working with him.”
