President Bola Tinubu has appointed Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the new Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Engineer Ramat, 39, is an electrical engineer and administrator with a PhD in Strategic Management, among other credentials.
President Tinubu also nominated two more commissioners for NERC. Mr Abubakar Yusuf, Commissioner of Consumer Affairs; and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun, Commissioner of Finance and Management Services.
According to a statement issued Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, all selections must be confirmed by the Senate.
Bayo further stated that, in order to avoid a leadership vacancy in the key regulatory agency, the president directed that Engr. Ramat enter office in an acting capacity pending his Senate screening, as required by law.
“Tinubu urged the new appointees to use their knowledge and experience to discharge their functions and work assiduously to advance the administration’s power sector vision,” the press secretary said.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is responsible for regulating and overseeing Nigeria’s energy sector, specifically the electric power business.
It was founded under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005.
NERC intends to restructure Nigeria’s electricity system by promoting transparency, accountability, infrastructure improvement, and sustainable energy development, while also tackling long-standing issues such as insufficient capacity, transmission issues, and unpredictable supply.
