The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspects for alleged involvement in an inter-state gun-running and kidnapping network.
It was gathered that one of the suspects, Haruna Jibrin, 30, a native of Wase, Plateau State, was to facilitate the movement of arms from Ughelli to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when operatives swooped on him following a coordinated sting operation on April 23.
Confirming the development, Delta state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that a follow-up operations the next day, April 24, led to the arrest of another accomplice, Isiyaku Adamu, 38, in Rivers State.
He said that the AK-47 rifle intended to be transported was recovered alongside a blue Toyota Corolla, with numberplate, MUS 138 DJ,used in the operation.
Similarly, the command’s tactical team based in Ughelli, acting on credible intelligence, on April 24, arrested one Ahmadu Usman, 22, a native of Lafiya, Nasarawa State, at Ekuigbo,Ughelli in connection with a kidnapping syndicate terrorising commuters,along Ughelli–Warri Road.
Further interrogation, according to the police image-maker,led to the arrest of another suspect, Haruna Abdullahi, 37, at Trailer Park,along Warri–Sapele Road.
The items recovered from them include: one AK-47 rifle, loaded with 36 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.
He said that the suspects in both operations are in custody while investigation is ongoing.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Police,Yemi Oyeniyi, reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for kidnapping and illegal arms trafficking and assured residents of sustained operations to ensure public safety.
